Il pittore Poul Friis Nybo (Copenhagen 1869 - Vejby 1929) studiò all'Accademia Reale delle Belle Arti di Copenhagen (1887), perfezionò poi i suoi apprendimenti alla scuola di Zahrtmann (1889-1892). Debuttò artisticamente con un'esposizione avvenuta nel 1892, a Copenhagen, al prestigioso Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition, dove continuò ad esporre per tutta la vita; mostre dei suoi quadri si ebbero anche all'Artist Fall Exhibitions, al Den Frie Udstilling e al Salonen di Parigi. Nybo si specializzò nella riproduzione di interni caldi ed eleganti spesso illuminati da lampade, che vedono quasi sempre presenze femminili (bambine, ragazze, donne giovani e adulte) intente a leggere un libro o a suonare uno strumento musicale; oltre alle figure umane anche gli oggetti, osservabili nei suoi dipinti più famosi, si ripetono costantemente (specchi, pianoforti, finestre, bauli, mobili); più raramente predilesse ritrarre paesaggi marini oppure tramonti. Nybo durante la sua esistenza viaggiò molto, per completare i suoi studi andò, tra l'altro, in Svezia e in Norvegia (1890-1891), fu per un breve periodo a Berlino (1905) e si recò a Parigi sia nel 1905 che negli anni immediatamente successivi. Come riconoscimento delle sue importanti opere Nybo ricevette un cospicuo numero di borse di studio e di premi. Ecco un elenco di alcuni dei suoi quadri più famosi.
